‘Meet the Bhutanese’

Background

On December 17, 2007, Bhutan will be celebrating 100 years of Monarchy. It was in 1907 that the first King of the Wangchuck dynasty, His Majesty Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuck ascended the Golden Throne of the Land of the Thunder Dragon. To commemorate and celebrate this happy occasion, a year-long event, starting from December 17, 2007 to December 2008, will be organised throughout the country.

The celebrations will highlight the evolution of the last Himalayan Buddhist kingdom in the world. The major events of the celebrations will include the enthronement of His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck as the Fifth King of Bhutan, adoption of Bhutan's written constitution and introduction of parliamentary democracy.
